Gifts of Menopause
Wrinkles and age spots are like battle scars, some have them and some don’t. The wrinkle factor can be cultural, genetic, environmental or self-induced. Or results of questionable product ingredients. In my world, where I grew as a woman by learning to accept my plushness as a form of beauty, I can appreciate the creases of my face because I understand the diversity of beauty. I can accept where you are in your personal acceptance too.
What we do about wrinkles, age spots and fading of our skin is as diverse as what we choose to do about our body’s plushness or padding. Some struggle, some fight, some go to war, some shrug, some nod, and some revel – meaning those women who don red hats, or the occasional mature woman who threatens to dance naked in the garden.
We want our skin to radiate, no matter our age. Imagine living to ninety-seven with sweet luminous wrinkles. And why not?! Vintage autos that make it past forty are admired by all. Though I know this is debatable because the wrinkles and rust are ground out of classic vehicles.
Side note: My grandmother had the sweetest wrinkles. Of course, she had never worn perfume, lip color or rouge either. Everyone else I know likes cosmetics, at least enough to purchase them for special occasions.
Consider what you want. What do we desire for our skin care? 
Again, this is cultural, familial, economically controlled, and varies on acceptance level. Some of us use olive oil or vitamin E lotion for skin care. Some prefer fine products, and some even consider cosmetic surgery and injection treatments an essential skincare regimen.
There are beauty products for lightening, brightening, thinning, circles, lines, and skin enhancement. Retention, imperfections, wrinkle guard and wrinkle remover. Dry skin, problem skin, sun-abused skin, and chemically-mistreated skin.
My beauty goals: I don’t want to itch or twitch. Yes, I once used a major brand eye cream that made me twitch after a few weeks. Stopped using it, stopped the eye twitch. Met a kitchen designer, same twitch, same product.
Me: I want refined pores and clear skin. My mother had huge pores, clogged and problematic.
Me: I want to glow. You know, that skin happy glow.
My greatest problem: I always experienced high sensitivity to cosmetics and skincare products. Cosmetic foundation caused terrible boil-like breakouts. Hair care products resulted in bumps on my scalp. Everything felt harsh. My eyes would burn the entire day if I used the wrong product for me.
I am fifty-three-ish now. A decade ago, I found skincare products which were never made with questionable ingredients. Nothing harsh, abrasive, drying, toxic. If one is only concerned with results, if one does not even care about the natural, safety conscious ingredients…. then know that these are premium, highly concentrated skincare and cosmetics. I think my favorite products are exquisite, as do women the world over. They make me glow without going to war on my complexion. And these are not my mother’s cosmetics or lotions.
My memories of beauty care products.
PMSing peri-menopausal woman with no clue.
I remember pink lipstick samples making my eyes and complexion glow. Oh, I was so lovely at ten. My mother’s medicated skincream clogging my teenage pores. Until she caught me. The one blue glass jar of medicated beauty cream was a luxury, like my mother’s Chanel perfume. Do not touch. I remember the first grey hair I plucked at thirty-five. A loving, teasing comment from hubby that induced three decades of hair colouring. Including the semi-permanent magenta-plum which was placed in the wrong box by a prankster.
I remember the wrinkle between my eyes at thirty-seven. Thinking it was all downhill, when in fact the hill was heading up. The first bikini I wore in public at age forty anyway. The silver enhancement glistening through my dark hair now. The glow of my skin and finely-pored texture. I appreciate the youngish look of my round face. That I have understood how everything in life is simpler when based on self acceptance and positive perspective.
I remember not being able to remember. Not wanting to remember. PMSing both pre-peri and during peri-menopause. A week a month. My horrified response was turning to ask, “What was that?” Hot flashes starting at forty-one. Waking in the night soaked and anxious. Depression from thyroid malfunction. Heart spells from exhaustion. Fading eyesight that was too sudden. Finding natural progesterone cream. Relief. Adding other products that stabilized my emotional, physical and even spiritual balance.
