For serotonin…. What are the deficiency symptoms?  What are the solutions to supporting our bodies to build the necessary level of serotonin? In fact….

What is serotonin deficiency?

Serotonin is a very necessary chemical in the brain that affects the mood we cruise with throughout the day. We can increase our serotonin by our activities and our nutrition and finding our place in the sun.

What if we do not have enough serotonin?

Symptoms of serotonin deficiency shows in our mood.

Since serotonin helps regulate our stress levels and sleep patterns, when there is a low level of serotonin, we can range from road rage to doomsday thinking or anywhere in between and not understand where it is coming from or how to relieve our mood.

If our serotonin level is low, our mood results are:

  • Pessimism, low self-esteem, anxiety, excessive worry
  • Panic, phobias, repetitive thoughts, obsession
  • Tension, anger, irritation, impatience, agression
  • Suicidal tendencies, hopelessness
  • Lack of impulse control
  • Decreased interests and less interest in normal activities
  • Craving for sugar
  • Insomnia, sleep patterns disordered
  • Post-menstrual syndrome and pre-menstrual syndrome
  • Chronic pain
  • Dark weather aggravates all these moods and challenges

Depression is most common sign of serotonin deficiency   copelessness

Melancholy, self-doubt for little to no reason, periods of remorse, no motivation, and deep depression always are a sign something is out of balance.  Now there are situations induced levels of depression and ther eare chemically-induced despressions.  We are talking about the chemical serotonin and what our bodies do when the level is too low.

Other factors that possibly cause serotonin deficiency:

  • Genetic variations
  • Lack of sunlight
  • Overexposure to plastics or chemicals
  • Insulin resistance
  • Blood flow to brain diminished
  • Antidepressant prescriptions in ‘excess’
  • Alcohol in excess.
  • Stress
  • Deficiency of serotonin precursors (the amino acid, typtophan, for instance)
  • Deficiency in progesterone Aha!

How do we maintain serotonin levels naturally?

small saladNutritionally, we are in charge of our serotonin levels.  Eating food that is good for our nervous system is an answer.  If our diet rich is serotonergic foods we support our own level of serotonin quite naturally.  Consuming these types of foods can support serotonin levels on a short-term time frame throughout the day.  So this is a natural place to begin.
  • Walnuts which contains protein, omega-6 fatty acids, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E and vitamin B6.
  • Flaxseeds for the same reason.
  • Mushrooms which contain folates and linoleic acids. Shiitake mushrooms, for example, have all eight essential amino acids and linoleic acid.
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Chicken and turkey – rich in Vitamin B6 for the production of serotonin

How to not reduce our own serotonin levels:

  • Use drinking and food storage products that do not expose us to plastics.
  • Do not use a microwave with plastic for the food container.  Do you own research.
  • Avoid toxic situations at work and in life. In other words, protect your stress level.

Other natural ways to increase serotonin?     serotonin-sunshine-happiness

  • Laugh out loud.
  • Exercise with fun in your heart.
  • Dance.
  • Pet an animal.
  • Cuddle.
  • Sex.
  • Play in the sunshine.
  • Gardening.
  • Handling dirt from the garden.  Besides producing your own fruits and vegetables or serotonin support nutritionally, you are coming in contact with a natural bacteria in the dirt, mycobacterium vaccae bacteria. This has been found to increase vitality and lessen pain in cancer patients by activating brain cells to release more serotonin.
Neurotransmitter serotonin is dependent on sunlight to develop for us.

Neurotransmitter-like melatonin, called the hormone of darkness, is dependent on darkness itself to develop in our bodies.
Natural enough, you think, depending on the natural orders of life?
Sunrise. Sunset.
Wake. Sleep.
Thought that was worth visiting one more time. The neurotransmitters of our bodies. How they are dependent on sunlight and complete darkness.
Just as a deficiency in melatonin can be caused by simply not getting enough sleep — the time when our bodies produce the melatonin we need.  So too, our deficiency in serotonin can be a result of not getting enough sunlight.

Natural sunlight.

This is a natural, purely exposed time in the sun.  Not through glass or window screens, not an unnatural light unless that is a light that has been manufactured to reproduce the natural effects of sunlight on humans.  Pure, natural sunlight without a sunscreen barrier.
.
Of course, I am not recommending the time in the sun is at an hour of day when you are exposing yourself to the harsh sun rays.  Sunlight can be enjoyed in the morning or evening, with just enough to do the body right and support serotonin levels naturally.
